Creating a brand from the ground up...
After receiving our song list, we chose the punk song, 9th at Pine. Two members of the group have knowledge of said genre, but the three others were brand new to the subject, adding some a challenge to the task. We started with a Google Doc, with our names, numbers, division of the work with the due dates, the labels we were researching and the song we chose. The two members, knowing of Punk , knew how to represent it creatively. Mentioning bands, the image and message Punk sends out, and the aesthetics of it. Two members researched bands and labels who produce punk music, of course there were misconceptions of punk, whether or not certain bands were considered punk. While working together, those misconceptions were cleared.
When designing the website, logo, and marketing campaign, those who knew the image of punk guided the designer. While using Canva, Adobe Photoshop, and other resources we designed fake website, instagram, twitter, merchandise, song cover, and logo. We divided the work, two on research, two on marketing design, one on the storyboard. Creating the marketing plan came easy when researching the punk labels, we studied what they did, how they did it, and the outcome of it. All the information stored on a shared Word Document. Next, we created the powerpoint, writing down our band ‘pitch’, including the Logo, marketing plan, the bands image, and target audience.
Last step was planning the music video. While doing the research and designing, one member was doing the storyboard, carefully listening to the song, capturing the meaning and essence and adding a storyline to it. As the one member did this, another helped out by adding ideas or planning out locations for the scenes. Planning the video took time, creating the right storyline that shows the message of the song while having a budget of zero and a due date created a challenge. We first tackled the message of the song, then, how we could present it in a music video. The message being, “don’t conform to society, be who you want to be for yourself.” We then discussed the storyline, basically there's two girls in a class, polar opposites, one who cares too much and another who cares too little about what others think of them. The first girl who cares and thinks too much, dresses in very preppy clothing and follows the standards of a goody two shoes; the other girl, without a care in the world, dresses in dark ripped clothes and an attitude. Lastly, we went over locations of the shooting, deciding on one's house, another's car, the school, gas station, a mall, and a plaza.
